As a member of an international team, you will analyze and work on the issues facing the energy sector and which specifically apply to our company. You will work hand-in-hand with your colleagues to develop strategic and operational solutions for E.ON – along the whole value chain. You will take on responsibility for your own work packages and ensure all operating processes run smoothly. You will develop concrete recommendations for action, create presentations and communicate your recommendations to the senior management. Direct communication and cooperation with your customers round off a multifaceted assignment profile.

How did you get in touch with E.ON Inhouse Consulting (ECON)?
I completed my Master in European Business in London and Berlin including the Master of Science track from 2013 to 2014. Having finished my thesis work, I wanted to get practical experience in consulting. My interest in the energy industry led me to apply for a three-month internship at ECON, after which I received an offer for a position as a Project Consultant. I happily accepted it, given the positive experience that I gathered throughout my internship, in particular the style of work and atmosphere at ECON.
What do you like most about ECON?
First of all I like the exciting projects at ECON. As an internal consultancy, ECON drives major strategic projects for the E.ON Group and at ECON you are a part of developing new strategies and turning them into reality. Even being staffed on a new project you can see how the strategy you have been working on evolves and what impact it creates. Additionally, I enjoy the working style at ECON: flat hierarchies and a strong feedback culture ensure a steep learning curve, supported by a broad training curriculum and a personal mentor satisfying individual development needs. However, most important to me is the friendly and collaborative atmosphere at ECON. It actually reminds me a little bit of my time at ESCP. We are a very international company with colleagues from 15 different nationalities, diverse backgrounds and we use English as the business language. Furthermore, I am not only spending time with my colleagues in the office. A lot of colleagues also became friends and we spend a lot of time together over the weekend.
Can you tell us more about your projects?
I worked on exciting projects in business development, driving efficiency or in digitalization. During my last project we founded a start-up company for Internet-of-Things-solutions in Berlin. It was really exciting to witness the whole process of strategy development and implementation, while navigating all operational challenges coming along with founding a new start-up. Currently, I am supporting E.ON’s Digital Transformation with a focus on Marketing and Sales for our solutions business.
What advice do you have for ESCP applicants?
The application process at ECON consists of three case-based interviews. Therefore, I highly recommend practicing this interview format. On the one hand it is important to get used to the structured approach of problem solving. To exercise this approach I read books such as Case in Point by Mark Consentio and solved a lot of case studies. The website preplounge.com is also quite useful. On the other hand I solved case studies and conducted mock interviews together with other students also applying for consulting jobs – the direct feedback was especially valuable for my preparation.
E.ON is a company in the energy industry; thus, some content of the case study will likely be related to the energy sector. Although you do not have to be an energy expert to apply at ECON, I would recommend getting a basic understanding of the industry and the current challenges in the market.
