A broad range of tasks across Europe

Unibail-Rodamco (UR) is Europe's leading listed commercial property company specialised in shopping centres in European capital cities as well as in offices and in convention & exhibition centres in Paris.

Through the European Graduate Programme (EGP), highly motivated graduates can discover the diversity of the Unibail-Rodamco Group and its approach to commercial real estate operations. Graduates are given a high level of responsibilities and leadership opportunities, a diversity of jobs in an international environment and a continuous exposition to top management.

Ingvar Rückermann, participant of European Graduate Programme

Ingvar Rückemann heard of Unibail-Rodamco’s EGP during his Master studies. UR was promoting their business game “UR Mall” that offered an inspiring case: to plan the optimal location for a new shopping center development in Berlin. Looking back, Ingvar sees how the EGP gave an outstanding preparation for his current job at UR as an Operating Manager being responsible for large assets like CentrO Oberhausen.

Each EGP completes three four-month assignments in different departments, including one assignment abroad; tell us about your assignments and your experience abroad.

I had a first mission in Asset Management, which offered a good practical introduction into the company’s core business, its principles and policies.

The second mission started in Stockholm, in the Leasing Department. I had the chance to work with the new Mall of Scandinavia, one of our most modern and attractive assets in the entire Group. The four-month stay in Stockholm taught me to see business from a different cultural perspective, work on a development project with unique challenges, and to build valuable capabilities in one of the core functions of the company.

For the third mission I came back to Germany and joined the Investment team. For me, this was the cherry on the cake of my EGP experience, since I could use my prior experience about the business and work from a more high-level view, by analyzing new investment possibilities on the German market. Also, my colleagues in this department were extremely helpful and contributed to further shaping the hard skills for the job.

How did the EGP Programme prepare you for your career development and everyday challenges within the company?

My track during the EGP was an outstanding preparation for the current job I am fulfilling. I always like to emphasize how each mission turned out to be even more intriguing than the previous one, and I could clearly see the learning process on every step. I believe it is a great chance for every EGP to do 3 different missions, possibly even with 2 positions abroad, and then join another function afterwards in order to get the full exposure to as many positions as possible.

Would you recommend other graduates to apply for the EGP Programme? What would you tell them?

I recommend this program especially for people with an interest in real estate and retail, but also encourage anybody with a general business background to take the chance. The tasks at UR are surprisingly diverse. The company is open for new ideas, which can be presented to the Innovation Board. During your first year you can develop valuable relationships with your fellow trainees. You can build a network over the entire European organization and all relevant functions, which makes future collaboration so much easier – spending at least one mission abroad is important from this viewpoint.
